Field Hockey

HYSA is currently looking for someone to coach the field hockey program, and will not have a field hockey program for the fall 2023 season.

If you need information about other local field hockey programs, please email HopkintonHYSA@gmail.com. If you are interested in coaching HYSA’s field hockey program in 2024, please contact Skate Murdough at skate@mcttelecom.com.

Fall

Our fall program is a more traditional travel program and is for girls in grades 3–6. During the fall we play neighboring youth teams, typically playing in up to six jamborees over the season. Field hockey skills will continue to be coached during practices. Game-time creativity, independent thinking, experimentation, and risk taking will be encouraged. At all levels, player development along with safety and sportsmanship are our primary goals. As always, fun will be the name of the game!

Spring

Our spring program is an in-town field hockey camp offered to girls in grades 3–8. All skill levels, from beginner to advanced, are welcome. Those players new to the sport will learn forehand and reverse stick ball handling, dribbling, and push passing. More experienced players will be coached in advanced skills like the reverse-stick sweep, reverse-stick spin, and drag flick. During scrimmages players will apply and share their newly acquired skills in game-time situations. Coaches will reinforce the importance of sportsmanship and team building at all times, and most importantly, have fun!

Both the spring and fall field hockey programs are intentionally scheduled not to conflict with HYSA softball and soccer, allowing girls to participate in either or both sports. Research supports the importance of sport sampling and the detrimental effects of early sport specialization. HYSA encourages multi-sport players with the goal of building healthy kids now and future athletes for life.
